Citation:

Mitchell, M. Ecosystem Services from Nature-Based Solutions. Northern Kentucky University Research Seminar, Highland Heights, KY, January 28, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation is a research seminar presented to faculty and students at Northern Kentucky University on 1/28/2022. The goal of the presentation is to introduce the audience to environmental solutions that can alleviate the negative effects of urbanization and agricultural expansion/intensification and highlight ongoing research investigating these systems.

Description:

Nature-based solutions are systems that use natural processes to improve sustainability. Green roofs and water quality wetlands are two examples of nature-based solutions that help to alleviate the negative effects of urbanization and agriculture, respectively. However, the full suite of ecosystem services provided by these potential solutions, and their interactions with their ever-changing surroundings, have not been fully explored. This interactive presentation will introduce the audience to environmental issues stemming from urbanization and agricultural expansion/intensification, as well as ongoing research exploring the potential benefits provided by green roofs and water quality wetlands.
